Depuis les années 2000, des recherches informatiques sont menées pour développer des systèmes capables de reconnaitre et interpréter les émotions humaines. Clément Lambelet s’est intéressé à ce phénomène de reconnaissance automatique des émotions et questionne sa généralisation notamment à travers tous les réseaux sociaux tels qu’ Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat qui utilisent ces algorithmes. 

Pour Happiness is the only true emotion il a travaillé à partir d’un panel de portraits établi par le Pain Expression Set de l’Université Stirling en Écosse, a sélectionné une émotion par sujet et recadré les images pour ne retenir que le visage. L’artiste a employé un traitement subjectif sur la matérialité même des images afin de rendre cette surface plus expressive. Ces portraits deviennent des vecteurs d’émotions. Chaque image est ensuite soumise à l’Emotion API de Microsoft afin d’en tester l’exactitude. L’Emotion Api n’a pu reconnaitre que le bonheur avec certitude.
