Over 250 millions years old, Balmuccia’fault is the fossilized scar left by an earthquake whose magnitude was superior to 6 on the Richter scale. In 2015, Grégoire Eloy accompanied geophysicits from the École Normale Superieure on a field trip to the Balmuccia rock outcrop and proposed to map the fault. The surface was divided into square metre parcels, marked on the ground by the scientists, indexed and photographed from ground level, then pieced together on a computer. Layout as an artist book, this photographic survey can also be used as a scientific tool. Cutting the pages and putting them together following their coordinates it becomes possible to reconfigure The Fault in its entirety at a scale of 1:10.
