Motor Memory brings together twenty-six unique editions, positioned somewhere between an artist’s book and a research notebook. Laure Tiberghien explores the material and plastic dimension of photography, pushing the boundaries of what the medium can offer. In the darkroom, she has developed a series of processes that dispense entirely with the use of a camera. Working with chemistry, light and time, she creates meticulously crafted images. The organisation and choice of colours are the result of long and precise preparations, while still allowing space for chance and the unpredictable. The gestures performed by the artist to achieve these results play a central role in her creative process, making each piece necessarily unique.
For Motor Memory, Tiberghien chose a medium that resonates with the temporality of her images. She sought out old notebooks, marked by light and time, whose pages each bear unique characteristics, echoing the original works consigned within. Each notebook holds ten prints, each exploring a variation on a single colour. The project’s creative dynamic refers to the notion of “motor memory” — a term borrowed from experimental psychology that describes the way gestures become embedded and recalled through memory. These notebooks therefore do not simply record a specific colour, but also reveal the singularity of the artist’s repeated movements, traces of which are embodied in the work itself. Each volume is protected by a cardboard jacket specially designed by SpMillot, numbered and signed by the artist, and indicating the chromatic variation chosen for each.
